1795 eröffnete Schumann einen Materialladen in Ronneburg, in den er 1000 Taler, den Gewinn aus seiner Schriftstellerei der letzten anderthalb Jahre investierte. Seine umfangreiche Büchersammlung richtete Schumann als öffentliche Leihbibliothek ein und setzte seine literarischen Arbeiten fort. Der erste, 1799 gegründete Verlag bot fast ausschließlich Werke aus seiner Feder. 1808 trat sein Bruder Friedrich Schumann in das Geschäft ein, und die Buchhandlung wurde nach Zwickau verlegt, wo die Firma unter dem Namen Gebrüder Schumann weiterbetrieben wurde. Der Verlag Gebrüder Schumann in Zwickau gab eine Taschenbibliothek der ausländischen Classiker in neuen Verdeutschungen heraus, die es auf über 250 Bände brachte. Schumann starb am 10.08.1826, als Nachfolger führte der Sohn Eduard Schumann die Firma fort. Dieser trat 1837 die »Taschenausgaben« an den Buchhändler J. G. Lindemann in Zwickau ab. Die Verlagsbuchhandlung Schumann bestand noch bis 1840. 1840 erwarb das Geschäft Hch. Erhard und verlegte es nach Leipzig. |
