Jürgen Wolter studierte Englisch und Latein an der Universität Marburg, wo er auch promovierte. An die Bergische Universität kam er 1972 - zunächst als Wissenschaftlicher Assistent, 1981 wurde er Professor. 1985 leitete er seinen Fachbereich als Dekan, anschließend war er bis 1988 Prodekan.
