Further information	studierte Physik an der Universität Rostock, promovierte dort in theoretischer Physik und arbeitete als Wissenschaftler am Heinrich-Hertz Institut der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR am Observatorium für Atmosphärenforschung in Kühlungsborn. Seit 1992 baute er die Atmosphärenforschung an der Forschungsstelle Potsdam des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts für Polar- und Meeresforschung auf. 1993 habilitierte er sich in Meteorologie am Inst. für Physik der HU Berlin und wurde 1997 zum Prof. für Atmosphärenphysik am Inst. für Physik der Universität Potsdam. Von 1997 bis 2016 leitete er die Sektion "Atmosphärische Zirkulation" an der AWI Forschungsstelle Potsdam und initiierte und leitete das MOSAIC Project bis 2016. Seit 2017 ist er als Koleiter an der Organisation und Umsetzung des MOSAIC Projektes beteiligt. Seit 2016 ist er Mitglied der Leibniz-Sozietät.
