Schweizer Buchdrucker. Aus Amorbach (Odenwald); studierte an der Sorbonne bei Magister Johannes Heynlin, lebte als Druckergeselle oder Buchhändler in Venedig und ließ sich 1477 in Basel nieder. Als Drucker arbeitete er zunächst vielfach mit Jacob Wolff von Pforzheim, ab 1502 mit Johannes Petri und Johannes Froben zusammen und stand in enger Geschäftsverbindung zu Anton Koberger in Nürnberg, für den er große Druckaufträge ausführte. Sein Druck- und Verlagsprogramm war humanistisch ausgerichtet: wissenschaftlich einwandfreie Texte von Kirchenvätern, Klassikern und Humanisten. Dazu bediente er sich der Unterstützung durch Johannes de Lapide, Reuchlin, Sebastian Brant und Beatus Rhenanus. Jeweils ein Exemplar seiner Drucke schenkte er der Basler Kartause, aus der er Handschriften für die Textausgaben heranzog. Sein Sohn Basilius führte das Geschäft fort |
